I like Twitter because I can find out what's going on in the world very quickly and there is more in-depth news availabe, that has a different bias to the usual avenues of TV and newspaper. It also provides good links to things I may find interesting like Grimney. If it wasn't for Twitter e.g. Frank Skinner and Paul Merton, I would not have known about Grimney. I do, however, tend to avoid "trending" topics such as #sincewe'rebeinghonest (I find it quite hard to type without a space, even if I think I have something to say about the topic :? ).
Facebook can be a nightmare, but I just tend to refuse requests from people I wouldn't otherwise see and those from my past that I didn't like (or sometimes didn't even like me!). Again though, I have friends who are very active in the Sheffield arts scene/Alternative events and since I don't get out as much as I used to after having a baby, I wouldn't otherwise know about what is taking place. Also, a lot of my very close friends have had to move around the country to get work, they've had children themselves and get-togethers are hard to organize and please everyone.
So, I think they both have their place and there is room in my heart for all!!

It would be great if we could all have each and every social networking site tailored to suit our own needs...we can't. There are parts of Facebook that I enjoy, but my pleasure comes at a price I begrudge paying. I suppose personal experience will always sway a person's opinion on any aspect of general life. I have some rather shocking personal stories regarding Facebook I could bore you with. They would help you understand my vitriol, but I wont bother you with it all...yet. I most probably have different types of human beings in my life compared to the 'friends' of those who love it...and I use the term 'human beings' very loosely.

Twitter. Yes, I would like it more if it was used in the way it should be...to spread interesting news and keep people in touch. When people will insist on zapping libelous comments around the world in seconds, that's when I lose my urge to get to grips with it. I just don't 'get' it. Others do...great for them, but I lose interest in it very quickly. I'm just one of these people who much prefer thumbing through a newspaper and picking up the phone to speak to the important people in my life.

To assume I'm criticizing every single person who uses Twitter and Facebook is a bit rough on me and, if it's come across like that, it really wasn't meant to. I didn't create this thread with the intention of undermining other people's likes and dislikes. I have an account with both networking sites, so there's no need whatsoever to justify your use of either. Live and let live...leave alone and be left alone.

Paul on Twitter? I wonder when he finally decided he would change his views on it and join up.

On a lighter note...I also have a baby girl. She is, as we speak, poking one of my cats hard on the top of its head and saying, ''CAT, CAT, CAT....''. My dogs are watching, hoping they're not about to get the ''DOG, DOG, DOG....'' treatment.

Didn't take offence at all Tanza, in fact I found your piece very funny :D I was just answering Nydas' question. As for libelous comments, well, everyone is entitled to an opinion and often it is better just to ignore the ones you don't agree with. Like I said, you can be selective as to the comments you read.
I do agree though, I miss the phone, but when I call people aren't always able to answer and as for texts, well we're back to written comment again, so find it easier just to send a message on facebook because I know someone will check their page at some point.
A lot of my friends had bad experiences with facebook, so I do get that it can be a nightmare. I only joined after being badgered by my husband. One very good example of a facebook failure is parents and in-laws keeping tabs on what you are up to. Not good at all, but find it hard to refuse them, for diplomacies sake.
My little girl loves our cats too. She's not talking yet, but she does meow loudly at them, tries to cuddle them while shouting "Mumumum" and pointing :)

Good...so glad I didn't offend. It's never my intention, whatever I write, and it's always good to hear other people's views and have them defend something they feel strongly about. None of us have a right to say what others should and shouldn't do and I'd hate to be part of a forum where members are worried about having their say, incase they are shouted down. I always steer clear of forums like that...they're pointless and boring. There's nothing like a good old-fashioned debate to really get you thinking.

As I said...I'm not a big fan of networking sites, but I do use them. I'm not sitting here with a quill and ink well, dabbing my scribblings on to this forum. I'm using the technology that's available to me.

It pains me when my in-laws frown at my children using their Nintendo DSs and prancing about while playing the Wii. They moan about parents today, fobbing kids off with technology so they don't have to bother with them. My father-in-law groans when the children stare into their console screens and away from his face as he's talking (bear in mind, he's usually talking to us about adult matters and the content is incredibly boring for kids). In all honesty, if I thought I could get away with doing the same...I definitely would! However, I can't. I expect it would be different if they were all sat up the table reading books on how to be good grandchildren. I guess their ignorance would be acceptable then.

One evening, my father-in-law's mobile phone rang and he answered it. I stared smugly at him during the whole conversation. I toyed with the idea of becoming openly impatient and frustrated at the interruption, but thought better of it. After all...respect for our elders and all that.

I think what I'm trying to say is. We all have our own ideas of what's acceptable. There will always be double standards in life, because we all have our own unique values and views. That's what makes life interesting. My fa-in-law resents parents using modern technology to appease their children, but he will gladly drive the latest car, buy the latest phone and surf the internet for a brand new camera. Why he doesn't get on his horse, ride down to his friend's house and draw a picture of him, I really do not know!! Of course, he would have to send a pigeon on ahead, carrying a message to make sure it was convenient!!

Not all parents would agree with my ideas about modern technology and its place in a child's life. On the one hand, I allow my children to use consoles. On the other, I'm very strict with their internet use. I vet everything they do and my eleven yearold is only allowed to use a FB account to play games. The only 'friends' she has are her sister, me and a made-up person to help with the games. I am more vigilant than other parents where the internet is concerned. I ventured into quiz rooms using mIRC many years ago and no way will I let my daughters have anywhere near the freedom that other parents allow their kids. Am I wrong or am I right?.....and who is really qualified to answer that?

No offence ever taken, I fully agree with all your points about facebook and still gaily use it! I am a bit disappointed to hear you don't use a quill and ink, I really like that look on the page. How about setting about making a comeback for ye olde ways?!?! :P

Hey I thought it was you! Haven't seen you in ages.

Oh, hi.

I thought I might have seen you at the quiz night round at the school. You usually do all the school stuff.

I gave it a miss. I'm busier now than I was then. I don't really see anyone.

No, I haven't seen you...are you ok? I mean, are you feeling all right?

Yeah. Actually, I've met this bloke.

Oh yeah? I had a feeling you had.

Why?

I dunno, just not seeing you about. You're usually around and nobody's seen you. People have been asking me what you're up to. I think a couple of them have sent you messages on Facebook.

I don't really speak to anyone on there anymore.

What's up? Doesn't your boyfriend like it?

No, he only wants me to speak to him. He gets jealous. We talk a lot though. It's not like he doesn't fill my time up.

How long's this been going on then?

About six months.

Six months!! You're kidding!...and you never told me? Wow, I'm really pleased for you. It must be going really well...can't wait to meet him.

Well, you'll have to wait...I haven't even met him myself yet!

Eh?

Yeah...he lives a long way away, but it's still working out okay.

So you've 'been' with him for six months and you haven't even clapped eyes on him. Okay.

He's really lovely. I love talking to him. We do talk on the phone. He's got an amazing voice. He sent me his picture. He's gorgeous!

Nice.

He is. He really makes me feel happy.

I'm glad. No, really I am. I mean...you needed something to occupy you and he sounds great. What does he do for a living...where does he work?

He's a top boss in a computer software firm.

Yeah?

Yeah...he earns loads of money and stays in expensive hotels a lot, because he has to travel all over the world with his work.

I see. So, he can't use any of his 'loads of money' to come to see you then? He can't book you both into one of these expensive hotels for just one night, so you can at least meet?

No, he's so busy. He's always telling me how busy he is. His life is so full and interesting...makes mine look really sad.

Your life isn't sad. Well, it wasn't.

What do you mean?

Well, come on, he's chatting to you for hours at a time yeah?

Yeah.

So, he's not busy is he? He's got loads of time to chat to you.

He chats while he's working.

So, he can hold down a massively well-paid job and still chat for hours to you while he's working? Does he talk to you in the evenings?

Yeah, really late at night. He has loads of work to do at home too. He can't chat to me until it's all sorted. It's kind of romantic to be lying in bed in the middle of the night...chatting quietly. We just whisper to each other. It's so sweet.

So...let me get this right. He can chat all day when he's actuallly AT work, but he can't chat to you all evening while he's NOT at work. He lives on his own I take it.

Yeah, he owns a big house...no mortgage. He's really well off.

Are you not getting this?

Getting what?

The guy's married...obviously...and all this stuff about being a top boss with loads of money?

No way is he married. He told me he was divorced. He's got kids that he sees all the time. He's a good dad. He wants to meet my kids.

So, why doesn't he phone you earlier in the evening instead of really late? Why does he have to whisper??

He just does! What is this, jealousy? Just because I've got a bloke and you don't like it.

I've got a bloke of my own thanks...a real one...I can see him and touch him and everything!

We're close too. We have our fun.

Oh, I get it. When he phones you really late at night...you have your fun?

Yeah, every night. Also, when he's at work, he can shut his office door and we can do stuff. He likes it when I turn my webcam on. He doesn't turn his on though, just in case someone walks in.

Stop!!

Well, you keep going on like it's not special and it is.

Well, excuse me for having an opinion on what I consider special and what I consider yucky and sordid. A few months ago, you were telling me you wouldn't dare send anyone pictures of yourself and, now, you're displaying it all on a webcam? You're mental! The guy's having you on!

No...and he said he loves me. He says it all the time actually.

Well, that's all right then!!! He has the ability to type the words 'I love you'. Give that man a round of applause!!

He says it on the phone...loads.

He says he loves you...what more could you ask for? Oh, I know...a bit of reality!

You're jealous. I'm happy and I don't give a shit what you think. We're together and, as soon as he's finished the major project he's working on, we're going to meet up. He's totally pushed to the limit at work at the moment. He hardly has time to chat to me, he's been so stretched. The last few days he's even been too busy to call me at night.

Chatting to other women probably. I wonder how many webcams he's viewing at one time. Look...I'm only trying to help you. I don't want to see you get hurt.

Well, I wont. I'm lucky to have found him. I'm not about to let you spoil it with all this rubbish. I've got to go.

Just take care, yeah? You're an easy target for blokes like him. They see you're desperate and you end up believing every word they say. Why wouldn't you? Don't trust him...he's just playing you. Seriously...take care.

I AM taking care. You think you know it all! Me and him...we're solid. As soon as he's freed up from work, we're going to go on holiday together. I'm on my way to the travel agent now. He said I should pick out where I want to go and then we can book it when he's not so busy.

Good luck with that.

You're such a jealous cow.

Yeah, I'm sooo jealous. I wish my boyfriend was a sleazy little internet letch who can never find the time to meet me. I wish my boyfriend was sitting at his computer all day pulling his plod. Yeah...really jealous.

He's not little...he's really fit.

Of course he is.

I've seen his picture.

Of course you have.

He will meet me. He's just too busy at the moment.

You mean...his wife wont let him.

I'm going. Have a nice life.

I will!

So will I!

For now ...
