I think the key is fear of judgement. We put on a show, and we already know how people will react, so it's under our control. It's a shield, a shell, so no-one can see the real us.
What it takes is trust. When you have someone who accepts you at your worst, then you can be real. Sometimes our show is a test. Accept me like this, and I will show you the real thing. However, it takes a lot of courage to drop our shields.
When you can drop your shields, when you can accept yourself as you truly are, it is liberating. It is like standing on solid rock, immovable and unshakable.
You can stand tall and say "This is me, like it or move on", not out of pride or bravado, but as a statement "What you see is all there is. This is me."
I am fortunate to have friends who accept me as I am, with all my faults and failings, all my weirdness, all my stupid jokes.
I am me. I am no better than anyone else. I am not better looking, stronger, or more intelligent. I do not know more than others. I am not wiser. I am just me.
This is me, like it or move on.
