THE CHURCH

I went to church on Christmas day
To do what people do in there
I've never much believed in God
But on that day I just don't care

I help them sing their songs and pray
Encourage them to keep their faith
And somehow all the words of love
Make everyone feel warm and safe

I can't help feeling as I do
That God just can't be real or true
But something in that church that day
Can't be explained by me or you

This ancient building full of cracks
That fascinates me every year
Gives everyone the chance to think
As fear and worry disappear

Who knows what brings each person here
When I, myself, have crept inside
A non-believer through and through
With no religion as my guide

I wish more people would accept
The church is there when we can't cope
To ponder without interruption
With others who believe in hope

I look around as nods and smiles
Are passed between each friendly face
Not everyone believes in God
But all have grown to love this place

My Christmas spirit has arrived
with dear old uncle Jack
and once the Baileys have popped in
there'll be no going back

we've said Hi to the Harveys
and Gordon is a tonic
but it really is the Cockburns
that makes us feel bionic

The Becks are in the corner
and Bud's a lovely fella
and in with a flounce and a flurry
comes the lovely Stella

but to add a bit of sparkle
and stop us feeling glum
nothing could be better
than the arrival of our Mumm!

I love my Christmas present
just like I loved my Christmas past
and soon it will be Christmas yet to come
the years fly by so fast

The Christmases when my kids were small
and Mum and Dad were still around
putting stockings into bedrooms
trying not to make a sound

The ones when things were not so good
but I smiled and battled through
the ones when things got better
and we started out anew

the ones when my children were grown up
but at Christmas were ten years old
and still they wanted stockings
those Christmases were pure gold

So I'll love my Christmas present
just like I loved my Christmas past
and I'll love all my Christmases yet to come
til I get to the very last

A forgotten hero... :-) (well it IS Christmas) !

Dont stumble little Donkey please
dont stumble lest you fall
Your load so precious take your ease
Walk straight and true and tall

Behold this day of wonderment
Behold a guiding star
that lights the way that you've been sent
And guides you from afar

Your weary bones may tire and creak
Though you must venture on
For Mary is with child so meek
Your job it must be done

You reach the stable harsh and wild
While straw now makes your bed
There cries in Crib a special child
Lays down his gentle head.

And on this day henceforth from here
let no-one fail to tell
How one brave donkey showed no fear
And served his master well..
