Hello, i have a problem with writing complete poems. I can come up with a few lines and come up with good and interesting subject matter. Its just turning it in to an actual poem i struggle with. Any suggestions?

Maybe a few members should collaberate on a poem. I have the same problem Keith, I think it's fairly common to writers. I don't know about other people but I can go for months and months without completing anything.

I agree with that too Don1.I like poems that rhyme, I suspect a lot of people do but won't admit it. Poems that are honest and straight from the heart are great (In my opinion) It's a shame there's so much snobbery in poetry. It should be something that can be enjoyed by everybody.

I like both types. Personally, I find the poems I write that don't rhyme to be ones that are more raw and emotional. My tip, is to write as much as you can, leave it and then come back to it. Doesn't matter how much time it takes, the poem will come eventually.

Oh don't get me wrong, I like poems that don't rhyme too. I've even written some! But what I mean is 'serious' poets often frown on rhyming poetry - I don't know why.

I love Yeats and he does a lot of rhyme. Would call him a serious poet.

I meant contemporary poets. Anyway, I love the poets in Grimney and that's all that matters! In fact I'm going to have to start putting my address down as Land of Grimney :lol:

I like both types too. I think I like to write funny and witty poems with more structure and rhyme, but when I write hard-hitting stuff, it usually doesn't rhyme. However, I'm not happy unless it flows with a rhythm. Sometimes, it can be the forced pauses or reiteration that really invokes a physical response to what's being said, rather than the basic explanation you're trying to give about the subject matter.

If you write more from the heart, you might need to give away some rhymes, otherwise you'll be putting words in that you aren't feeling. There are only so many days, lays, ways and mays you can have.

My favourite rhyming poet in Grimney has to be Iceman. His poems always sound so original and fresh. The words around his rhymes are beautifully arranged and I always get blown away with the emotion of the whole thing. I don't feel like his technique restricts what he wants to say and how he wants to convey it.

I agree you should write a poem however it comes out and then go back to it. I think I've written something I'm happy with and then I see lots of bits I can change. Posting poems you're not quite sure about is a good thing here in Grimney. It lets other people see that we're all in the same boat...all experimenting and waitig to encourage others. Hell knows I've posted many a poem I just can't perfect. Why waste them if they're an indication of what you're thinking or feeling? Just go with the flow...so to speak.

Don't be put off by all the 'rules' these 'proper' poets lay down. Let them frown. There are no rules where your own creativity is concerned. Pam Ayres did okay didn't she!?...more than okay. It just depends on your genre and where you want your writing to go.

Try a bit of everything. It usually works out if you're excited about it. Enthusiasm is 99.9 recurring per cent of the whole piece for me, when reading other people's poetry. If it's there...I'll enjoy it!
