BeingDoris! Firstly I love your name! In my world 'Doris' is a name that's used for any female who's name I can't remember or any female that I don't know who is being referred to in conversation.
e.g. 'you know, that blonde haired Doris over there..' And lo, I find that you are Being Doris. That's amazing!! All those women, rolled into one :D

Secondly, Your poem is a gem. Such unusual images relating to such a normal subject. If I had children (generally I only use them for spells) I would send them to your school. I suspect you are anything but gray!!

Hi Elvira,
You are exactly right about my name! I've been a Doris for a long time!
Thank you for your kind words about my poem. I'm blushing and delighted.

Note to self.....

The Mirror

Don't get the mirror, no, don't touch,
She will not look,
She's lost too much.
Her face;
That once upon a time,
Was all reflected, always fine;
Has changed;
For time, a jealous thing
Has wrinkles ploughed into her skin.

Her once bright beauty's lost beneath
Her faded, powdered, puckered cheek,
And bitterness has gripped her brow
No laughter lines, just fish mouth now.
A fortune spent, to no avail
Her face it tells a sorry tale,
Regardless of their creams and lies
A sagging hangs around her eyes,
And even knives could not defend
From botox scars, for in the end
This mirror tells a bitter truth
Old age has clearly stolen youth.

Far better had she faced the fact
That being eighteen would not last
And focused on the her inside
The soul her vanity denied,
Perhaps instead of fear and doubt
Her spirit would have shouted out
And made the most of what she'd got,
Instead of leaving hope to rot
Perhaps she would have seen the truth
There's more to life than craving youth.

Being Doris, LOVE your poem it's so accurate and beautifully crafted!

And Elvira, you pull yet another marvel out of the scrabble bag.

Before You Speak

I opened my mouth and a foot fell out.
Again,
I hadn't looked before I spoke.
If I'd been a car
You would have wrecked me,
Over a cliff perhaps, so you could watch.

Would I have eaten my own words as I fell?

I opened my mouth and a foot fell out.
I wish you'd used one on me,
Before I could speak,
Before I could....Well you know.

If I open my eyes now, will you have gone??

Yeah the Wordsmith! :D Great Elvira. Every time I read a poem of yours I'm very much there in the moment.
Don't know how you manage it. Whenever I try to write poetry my thoughts won't stop rhyming and the emotion is lost in badly chosen words.
I take my hat off to all the poets that have contributed. Poetry is hard!

It is hard, I've written more dross than I care to admit to!

I wrote this in 1983 at a very tender age (no not telling!) see what you think. It's the first poem I ever finished.

Baby

Serene,
A baby’s face asleep
When cares are all forgotten.
Free of defilement or distress,
Devoid of all things rotten.

Sacred.
Life in a tiny form
A creature full of need
For love and care and kind caress.
A beau ideal indeed.
