*Baal watches as Vortigern leaves*.
Oh certainly, although I don't tend to drink much tea Princess, but of course I'll partake to be polite.
*His nose twitches nervously*.
Such a pleasure to be in your company my dear child, I have always looked upon you as a niece you know, I've always felt almost like an uncle to you.
*He smiles at Sousie and his eyes dart from side to side, Baal returns his gaze to the Princess*.
Ah, yes.... Venn... Good to see him again... He does look familiar... Pity for his wounds, but he's in tender hands here I should think....

Do you take salt in your tea? I forget... of course most humans prefer sugar... but you...
*She sips her tea and watches as Sousie takes a tray to Kalvos*
Let's not play games Saygin. You risk Darl's wrath by your knowledge of who Venn is.... so no doubt he is part of some scheme. I don't know what it is but if you ever try to hurt or kill him again, I will not be as merciful as I have been in the past.
*Her gaze does not leave Saygin*
I do know you were in league with Slayvern Kursk with the Black Pillar business. That was very naughty.
*She sighs and drinks some more tea*
So are you going to tell me what manner of phantom is killing these soldiers? I don't for a moment believe that it is a disease. I want the truth Saygin, for once just tell me the truth.

I've made mistakes I admit, but my dear child I have never meant harm to anyone.
*Baal smiles uneasily and shakes his head*.
Salt? I'll not take salt... Thank you.... I'll pass on that.....
*His nose twitches*.
Games? I play no games... I am a victim of fate and circumstance... All that I have done, I did with little choice... I fell among bad seeds and I have grown out of them.....
*Baal takes the cup and saucer from Philomena and his hands shake*.
I am old, and tired.... I wish to live out my final years in peace....
*He raises the cup to his lips, sniffs the liquid but does not drink*.
Phantom? There is a phantom in the castle? Have I seen such a thing? My memory is poor, sometimes I fail to remember what was seen or heard even an hour before....

Why are you so nervous Saygin? Do you think I have poisoned your tea? Poisoning is not my style.
*She smiles*
Or perhaps you worry I have slipped a drop of truth potion in it? You forget that I am not a witch...
*Her beautiful eyes stare into the old man's*
You will find peace in redemption... and redemption in truth. You can trust me, I will see you are not harmed... but something is killing those soldiers. Something supernatural and I am guessing that you are behind it.
*She puts a spoonful of salt in her own tea and a pinch of dried seaweed*
I like salt and seaweed in my tea. Makes it taste like home... Another thing Saygin... why did you not save Darl? Why did you leave it to me?

*Baal raises the teacup to his nose and his nostrils flare as he sniffs.
Not so.....
*He places the cup and saucer upon his lap*. I have a nose for poisons... I would not expect you to take such a course of action.
*He shakes his head*.
Oh no my dear.....
*Baal lowers his eyes sheepishly and stares up through his bushy eyebrows*.
Darl's wounds were too severe. I am a simple physician. My skills are merely herbs and potions. I am not a surgeon.... I would have saved him if I could.... Understand I am devoted to you and the Kanaran cause.
*Baal's nose twitches and his eyes dance from side to side*.
I fear there maybe another enemy within the walls of the castle, almost a disease in itself... But I am not to blame....

Nonsense, it was the poison that was killing him. You said so yourself. You could have saved him, instead you left it to me... and that was cruel.
*She drinks more tea*
Are you really not going to take a sip? I'm starting to get insulted... The Kanaran cause is not my cause. I am merely Darl's hostage. You know that Saygin, you are no fool.
*She smiles sweetly and takes the old man's hand*
Nobody will blame you... but if there is an enemy within we must protect ourselves. What is it? Perhaps.. Perhaps if I do you a favour...
*The mermaid squeezes his hand gently*
You will do me a favour and persuade Darl to allow me an amicable divorce. A human wife would suit him better... I would ask him again but he broke my ribs last time, I think you are far more persuasive than me.

Enemies are all around us Philomena... The new enemy in this castle will not harm you.... It will be tamed.... And I myself am perfectly safe from its appetites... *Baal looks uneasy and slides his hand away from Philomena's, he pats her wrist gently*.
Yes... Thranmere.... The poison that flooded his body was beyond anything I could cure my dear...
*He opens a bottle of bloodwart and pours a little into his teacup turning the liquid red*.
Darl's hostage are you? I am sorry to hear this.... I doubt that the kanarans will ever take control of Grimney.... You wish a divorce from him? Not something I could negotiate, but perhaps other forces at work will change your fate into something else....
*Baal smiles and sips his tea*.
What favour would you do for me? If I could help you in some way?

Favour? If you cannot persuade Darl to divorce me then I have very little need for you.
*She shakes her head in disappointment*
That is all I want... I want to leave him without any bloodshed, without murder or war. I want to...
* She sighs*
What does it matter... There is no better life for me. Perhaps it would be better if this new enemy took my life, I have no hope left to fight for and immortality is a curse.
* The mermaid looks sad and leans back in her chair with her eyes closed*
You may leave Saygin. If you offer me nothing, I can offer you nothing in return.

Why should he want to divorce you? Darl need not recover, I can keep him unconscious forever if you so choose.
*He chuckles and drinks his bloodwort tea*.
Bloodshed, murder and war are all that interest the kanaran hoards. Once they've taken this land they'll not stop merely on this shore....
*Baal smiles*.
The new enemy has a stronger taste for human blood my dear.... And if she sinks her teeth a little too deep you'll have a new form of immortality.....
*Baal sighs and his nose twitches*.
One that only daylight can take....

Yes... I know vampires find mermaid blood too cold and salty. It is not just daylight though... I think you will find a stake through the heart or decapitation does just as well.
*Philomena opens a box and places a small bottle decorated with suns on the table*
Liquid sunshine... Such a clever invention of the Wolf Witch. If I were to open this bottle then my while chamber would be flooded with sunshine...
*She plays with the bottle*
I don't appreciate my men being drained of their blood... and I certainly don't like the fact that you blamed the children for a mystery disease. Tell your new... acquaintance... that she would be best removing herself to Vale Mora. Otherwise I shall see that every inch of this castle is sun soaked.. including the corner that you are cowering in Master Baal.
*She sighs*
Darl should wish to divorce me because I will never be able to love him and he wants a wife who will love him as much as he loves her. You could try to suggest he divorces me and marries a Kanaran noblewoman.
*Her eyes fill with tears*
You don't understand the nature of mermaids. While Darl is my husband I must protect him... divorce is the only way. There are grounds... I was betrothed to Kalvos and that betrothal was never dissolved. I was not free to marry... If Darl would agree this marriage could be ended without a mess.
