*Deep in the woods Kalvos sits beside a campfire. He is roasting a radigan upon a spit. He is scruffily dressed in battered black leather armour and a huge beard covers much of his face. Kalvos watches the woodland carefully, his sword resting against the tree stump upon which he is sitting*.

*Janc enters the clearing and sits down on a log opposite Kalvos*.
I was held up.
*He draws his sword and picking up a handful of dry leaves wipes the bloodied blade clean*.
By bandits. They're dead now.
*He smiles at Kalvos*.
Been here long?
*He looks at the small radigan roasting on the spit*.
You've become a hunter. Some feast. Don't bite off more than you can chew.

I've been here too long....
*Kalvos mumbles*.
Janc.... Have you found out anything about Philomena? Where she is? I know she survived the demon attack, but after that....
*He tosses a log into the flames and watches the sparks fly*.
I still can't find her trail....

You look like a haystack.... You'd best forget her and disappear. Why'd she want you now anyway? You're only wanted by the High Council, they've issued a bounty on you....

Don't think of claiming it Janc, the bounty on your head is probably greater.
*Kalvos reaches forward and takes the stake from the fire and holding it with two grubby hands he begins to eat the cooked meat*.
And you're short of friends... My sword and yours at least gives us both a chance...
*He looks up from the meat, radigan juice dripping from his beard*.
Maybe I'll write a poem about our partnership one day.
*He spits a small piece of bone into the flames*.
Now what do you know?

*Janc raises an eyebrow and reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small bloodstained bag*.
Partners....
*He opens the bag and empties it upon his lap*.
Ears....
*Janc holds one up*.
They're trophies. Slit them off the bandits... I've got a lot of ears....
*He starts to hang them on a leather cord around his neck*.
Good to have fresh ones....
*He frowns and looks across at Kalvos*.
What do I know?.... Well she's not dead. Carados may have given his daughter to a Kanaran Warlord....
*He sneers*.
As an exchange for his help.... There's more than one army fighting the High Council.... We might be under their rule in time.... Should mean a pardon for me....
*He grins*.
Not sure about you....

That sounds like her father.... If he wasn't of her blood I would already have killed him....
*He lowers his head and sighs*.
My daughter.... My angels in the hands of a Kanaran barbarian.
*He shakes his head*.
We need to find Philomena and rescue her... We'll need help to do that....
*He looks up at Janc with tears in his eyes*.
We'll need to hire mercenaries.... And they'll be paid for their help... I'd give all the tobran I have to bring her back to me...
*He closes his eyes and sighs*.
And I will. Wherever she is I will find her again...

You don't look like the Kalvos of songs... I mean like the songs they sing about you and Princess of Zoltar. I thought you were golden-haired and golden-armoured... The most handsome knight in the realm they said. Nobody song nuffin about a big scraggy beard and lookin like an 'aystack.
*The girl looks at Janc and winks*
I almost fell out me tree laffin' when you said that. Mmmmm this is tasty, I've had nuffin but berries and roots since my village was burnt.
*She gnaws at the radigan and looks at Kalvos*
I didn't think knights were supposed to kidnap princesses. I don't see why you'd do it, the 'igh Coucil they 'ate her on account of her mermaid blood. There are bad men tryin' to kill her... I've seen them clomping through here when I've been up me tree hiding. Bad men them are... but they are scared of her husband, there's no mistakin' that. Protects her with blood and steel he does.
*She stops to chew another mouthful*
They won't get her whilst she's tucked away at that castle... where is it? Windrock... no... Stormstone... Sumfin like that anyway. Why would you take her from a castle with food and fires and all nice things and drag her round this orrible woods. Sounds selfish to me.
*Sylvie shrugs*
You must have been in a cave if you haven't heard about the royal wedding. Princess Philomena wore a dress of purest silver and everyone said there has never been a more lovely bride. The Queen even went and gave her blessing, and she ain't been out in public for years. Everyone talked about it... until the orrible ole war broke out.
