Kalvos would never become like you... and once my agents find him, he will come and swear in front of the highest judges in the land that I was betrothed to him and then I can get this marriage annulled. I swore nothing to you, I said nothing, my father forced my consent.
*She looks at Darl angrily.*
Should I pity you because those you love were drowned in my seas? Many people drown in the Dudrassa, good and bad and the mermaids are bound not to interfere. It is the Goddess of the Sea who decides who lives and who dies. Not me.
*She gazes out of the window.*

I would not harm such a prize. Your father is a man much like me. The Kanaran military did not all drown at sea my princess....
*He shakes his head and looks the beautiful mermaid up and down*.
You are beautiful, even a warrior such as I can be gentle.....
*He pours more wine*.
I claimed the throne of the Kanaran Kingdom after the royal family fled and I fought back the Grimnian hoards....
*He snarls*.
I pushed them back to their shore and I will stand beside your father and bring down the High Council and scorch the land dry until we have peace and democracy...
*Darl shakes his head*.
I am not here for a wage... I have you as my bride. I will take Grimney and stand beside your father. Kalvos is nothing. Forget him.... I am everything to you now.
*Darl stands up and places the wine down upon the table*.
You’ll return to the sea... I promise you, I will take you there....
*He places his hands gently upon Philomena’s shoulder*.
If Kalvos is found alive I will protect him, you need not worry, but go against my ambitions and your father’s wishes and he will surely die....
*He kisses her neck gently*.
Such a pretty neck....

You are exquisite. The last thing I saw of such beauty, was a butterfly, I held it in the palm of my bloodstained hand.
*He sighs*.
It would have flown away, but I would not let it.... It was my instinct you see, a desire to keep its beauty, so I closed my fingers...
*He narrows his eye at Philomena*.
Broke its wings... It died soon after that... But at least I had that moment with it, that little contact.
*He smiles and strokes his beard*.
You have to be mine... And any who deny my right to you, will die by my sword... You must learn to love again... To ease my pain Princess....

*The mermaid bites her lip to stop herself.*

*She reaches up her hand and wipes the tear from his cheek*
Will you do something to make me happy? You and my father are alike, you scorch earth and you win battles but you will never be able to bring peace to the land. Give me one legion of soldiers. One legion of the most honourable of your command that will rebuild towns and villages after you have flattened them, who will distribute bread to the poor, find homes for the orphans and work for the widows. I will bring a dozen healers from the Dudrassa to tend to the wounds of the fallen, friend or foe. That way, you can win hearts as well as battles. The High Council are wicked and corrupt they will not do such things. You and my father, you know much about fighting and tactics, but you do not know what a Princess knows, how to be loved by the people high and low. Once the battles have been won, you need that love to bring stability to the land.
*Philomena takes a step back.*
You only know how to crush and destroy... I know that is what you intend to do to me, but please I beg you do not do that to this land. Leave something beautiful.

*He snarls*.

The weak must die and the strong must be cut down... This land will be scorched. And the High Council will be torn apart by wild dogs when they are captured....
*He bows his head to the mermaid*.
'Peace in death' is the motto of the Kanaran military.
*He takes the mermaid's hand and kisses it, before looking up coldly into her face*.

*He steps back*.
I have tactics to discuss. War is a matter of thought, it is not just the blind and bloody will of barbarians...
*He turns to leave*.

Dryce Slygar sits in the back of the cart, his hood pulled down over his face, cluthcing the leather bound journal beneath his grubby fingers. He plays with the new gold ring upon his finger, and gazes upwards to the distant hills. Dryce's three colleagues are also focussed on the journey ahead and they can see through their dust filled eyes the high grey walls of Stormrock Castle rising before them*.

You'll be mine Philomena.... We're both displaced, you from the sea, and me from my home long ravished by the Grimnian invaders.....
*He looks sad*.
I'll never go home.... Grimney's armies did not spare our people.... Slaughtered them in their thousands and dragged others into slavery...
*Darl grabs Philomena by the throat and glares at her angrily*.
And your ocean crashed my soldiers against the rocks.... A warrior should die in battle not drown like a rat...
*Darl sighs and places his hand upon the bare skin of Philoemena's shoulder*.
I must talk to my generals. It is war Philomena, and good and bad alike must die. It's the nature of it.... But I'm not a monster....
*His eye glistens with a single tear*.
And even I would not turn my back on love, false though it would be....
*Darl hears the rattling of a cart beneath the castle walls and moves to the window and gazes down*.
It seems we have visitors.... Scavengers by the looks of them.... I must go....
*Darl turns and pulls Philomena towards him and kisses her roughly upon the lips. He steps back and walks to the door*.
Dress for dinner my butterfly... And bring a good knife, the meat maybe tough....
*He exits the room*.
