Oh, yes. The Pretender.
He has his own band of followers. He is impressive to look at. A very charismatic person, very charming, but he is a liar and a murderer.
He had a number of schemes which seemed to promise much, but were ultimately destructive.
Once, he went to Emerald Ley, a community of hard working farmers, and sold them little bottles, each containing a fish. The fish started out being no bigger than a thumb to the first joint, but they grew.
They became too big for the jars they came in, so the people bought bigger jars, then glass boxes, then they had to set aside a room in their houses for the fish. Eventually they decided to dig a lake and put all the fish there.
All the time they were trying to make sure the fish were all right, the community suffered. The crops were untended, and their money went for food for the fish. The harmony of the village was destroyed by arguments, all over the fish.
On another occasion, he convinced a lad to follow his dream, only to destroy him - almost. The boy was an apprentice to a veterinary surgeon and showed great promise. He cared greatly for the animals he tended, and thought nothing of staying up all night to help a cow in labour.
Then the Pretender, on hearing the lad sing, persuaded him that he should take it up as a profession. He told the boy about the happiness that came with fame and riches. Convinced, the boy left for the city.
At first all seemed well. He went to taverns and sang, and people paid him money. Musicians joined him, and they travelled from place to place.
All this time, the lad felt empty inside. He enjoyed singing, but afterwards, nothing. He took to drinking and gambling, and many a pretty lass attended him.
After a while, his singing suffered, and the band had more trouble finding work. His voice lost it's pleasing tones because of his drinking.
The band split, and he found himself alone. Depressed, he was about to throw himself off of a bridge, when he saw a goat in pain. His heart went out for it, and he nursed it back to health. The goat's owner was very grateful and gave him food and a bed for the night.
The following day, he went back to the vet, who accepted him back readily, and the lad returned to his true vocation.
These are among, literally, thousands of stories in which the Pretender has wrecked the lives of individuals, and even whole communities. He once set two nations against each other for the want of a black liquid that flowed from rocks. After the war, the nation that won found that the liquid polluted their waters.
