Indeed Tanza that has been the greatest joy of Grimney for me!
Wayland the your interpretation is as valid as any, that's the lovely thing about poetry it can be whatever you want it to be !!
just thought I'd add these last 2 verses

My Father is no longer with us
the husband was kicked into touch
My sons have grown and flown now
and it doesn't happen so much

So now I am someone's Partner
but call me this at your peril
for after many decades of longing
I am simply known as Meryl!! :D

I don't think it is possible to get things wrong in poetry, Master Cybersmith. The writer might have a specific topic in mind when writing, but if the reader sees something else, it is equally valid. That is what I like about poetry: it transcends meaning sometimes, and speaks straight to the heart.

This is why if ever I am asked what one of my poems means, I reply "What does it mean to you? That's all that counts."

I guess it's better that the reader feels they've gained something from reading something, even if it's not what was originally intended.

I wrote one scene for a play this week and asked a few people to proof it for me. One asked if it was about drug addiction. It wasn't. However, I decided they had a very good point indeed. So, now, I'm going to use the parallel they suggested in surrounding notes and comprehension work.

Sometimes, we can't even see for ourselves, what we've written...if that makes sense. I like the scene I wrote even better now! So...result!!

Oops! I'm still new to this forum stuff. I hadn't realised there was a Page Two, so posted before I read yours.

Redvlist, not many of us know what's going on most of the time, so you'll fit right in!

Hi Gwen, bit late but I love both installments of your poem, they ring true for me in so many ways!
Brilliant!
