Peace is my gift, peace my life, But there are things that give me strife. Friends, I have, dear friends indeed, Who have no peace, but peace is their need.
Some of them have been enslaved By bottle, or needle, or lottery card. No diversion for these, but misery And then they have no food, no money.
Some are enslaved by passion, By hatred, lust, greed or ambition. Their own desires supersede all Ignoring another's "help me" call.
It is their lives, it is their right To choose the dark way, or the light. They find themselves in deepest pit With no way up, they think "this is it".
It would be different if they were free, But their choices are forced on them, you see. They are driven to do what they hate most And it consumes them with shame, guilt and disgust.
But I can't live their lives, or make their choices I can only wait, and pick up the pieces. It grieves me to see how my friends suffer My life of peace, I can only offer.
The worst pain that I know, Is to see their pain, and nothing can I do. I lower the rope down to the pit For them to climb, but there they sit.
