I think using a swear word for emphasis is valid. It can also be valid if you are writing for a character that would swear as part of their normal speech. Swearing without constructive purpose, however, should be avoided (in my view).

If writing an insult, you can be creative without swearing:

** He looked like someone who could give himself visual prostate examinations.

** She had the charm and grace of a flatulent camel on a bad day.

The flipside of this is to consider what a swear word actually is. Some of the favourite 4-letter words were actually part of normal Anglo-Saxon language. After the Norman invasion, Anglo-Saxon was considered vulgar and common. French, Latin and Greek were considered cultured. Other swear words are corruptions of prayers and invocations. For instance, Blimey came from "Blind me to evil, Oh Lord."
