*Kalvos hugs the mermaid*.

Dragon riding is not really me. I'm sorry. I'm thinking of cutting my hair very short, and I really should dust off my armour. I guess I need to wear it again.

I don't really have much to tell you of my family. I was sold to Lord Darius Rackham when I was about nine or ten, hard to remember, it's so long ago. My family were very poor, they wanted a better life for me. I was then raised with a sword in my hand, and then recruited into the Queen's Elite... My training lasted many years. Lord Rackham was very kind to me. I'm sure he would like you! But once the training finished I never saw him again.

I often think about my family, about who they were, where they are... Maybe my love of art and poetry came from them. I sometimes look up at the stars and think that somewhere in Grimney they might be looking up at the same stars as me.

Oh my poor boy, you were sold like a slave and have been ever since... You will be free one day. Perhaps one day you can come beneath the waves with me and my family can become yours... If not, we can build our own family together.

Yes, you will need to wear your armour again but not for long. Just until the battle is over. Why haven't you been wearing it? Don't cut your hair my darling, I love running my fingers through it. I'll trim it for you if you want. I like taking care of you.

A hawk swoops down and drops a note in Philomena's hand

Dearest Philomena

Please take great care, I have a very uneasy feeling. Something is not right. My dragon is watching over you. I have ordered him to kill anyone who puts Kalvos's life in danger. I hope nothing happens there to put you or Kalvos in danger. I have a very uneasy feeling about Jonas, I really don't know why, it's just a feeling and I can usually rely on my instincts. Just please be alert. Elios rode after you but he was heading for the Cabal, he hasn't arrived here.

If all is well and my worries are unfounded, I will ride back to the tavern tomorrow. The dragon will follow you until you are back safely. I have my horse, he goes like the wind! I haven't decided on a name for him yet.

Your friend, Meadow x

You've got a letter? What does it say?

I suppose the Queen's ELite are glorified slaves, but they are a great fighting force, and I've been proud to serve with them. They've been like a family to me. But I am now ready to leave, and I'll go wherever you go, I'd like a family. Although I'm not sure your family will ever accept me.

Yes. I will wear the armour again, and once the battle is over we should try and find Urat, I'm sure he misses you and the tavern, I hope he is well.

I won't cut my hair angel, but a trim would be good, I'm starting to recede a bit you know, it must be the worry of things.

It is a letter from Meadow, here read it. Best not to read it aloud.

*Philomena hands Kalvos the letter and strokes Kalvos's hair as he reads it.*

Don't worry about your hair my love, I can get you a comb to stop your hair receding further and I didn't think it was in a knight's nature to worry. If my family do not accept you, although I am certain my mother will love you, we shall make our own. Perhaps we can settle at the tavern, I'm sure Urat will adopt you, Gwennie and Meadow can be your sisters... And Sweeney can be your brother! Then we can think about raising a brood of our own, born underwater so they keep their mermaid tails. That way when they grow up they can choose between a sea life or a land life.

Urat... Korben has him prisoner, he wants his enemies dead and believes Gwennie and I are the ones to do it... Maybe we will have to. :? I pity Korben, a most unhappy creature.

Daybreak in the swamp .. A strange light isn't it, when the twin suns both rise and bathe the world in their brightness. We should saddle up and go. There are creatures in the tavern that need my care.

That's an interesting letter. I guess we'd better wake our guide... If he was going to betray us, the dragon and your appearance may have put him off.

I do worry, a Knight that does not worry or feel a little afraid about life is either mad or stupid, and Knights like that generally don't live that long.

*He holds Philomena by the hand and looks up at the twin suns and the strange green sky, a flock of Mogrins fly overhead*.

Funny things Mogrins. Never make a home, but always looking, hovering over the land but too afraid to settle. I just hope you'll be happy as the wife of a disgraced Knight. I'll be happy, that I'm certain of. Raising our children, making a home. That's what life is all about, I can learn to swim, the children can teach me, I'll be the odd one out though, not having a tail.

I guess we should head back, we've tempted fate here long enough, and I saw riders to the east, probably saw our fire, Jonas picked a very open area to make camp. Maybe Meadow is right, I like Meadow, she impresses me.

As for Urat, we will get him back after the Pillar dispute is resolved. At least when I leave the Queen's Elite I won't have to hunt your outlaw friends anymore. Korben... I know very little about him, but he does carry a very high price on his head.

Shall we go home angel?

Home? Yes let's go home together.

*Philomena smiles and kisses the knight*

I won't think of you as a disgraced and I'll be happier when you are no longer a knight... Not just because you won't have to hunt my friends any more.

Let's ride...
