It died for want of nurture And the world has passed it by. And yes; absence made it fonder But that cannot last for aye.
It only needed watering Once in a long, long while: A call - a note, e’en quickly wrote; A word, a wave, a smile.
It’s withered now. The reaper Comes and cleaves it down like hay. On the quenching fire is tossed The love that passed away.
Bitter root is all that’s left To decay, ferment and rot. But the heady scent and glories spent Will never be forgot.
