Love, pah! Marriages between mermaids and humans are almost always unhappy.

*Evarne sighs.*

Mortal creatures of the land and immortal creatures of the sea... How could it ever work? Besides this human is a knight, hardly raised to be the husband of a princess.

*She raises her glass.*

Victory should be won by any means, surely a man of the world like yourself realises that. I imagine Kalvos would be more use to you if he was single, not a doting father and husband.

If I believed that victory should be won by any means I’d still be in the militia.

*Drax drinks more wine*.

Love is immortal, human life is not.

*He smiles*.

Kalvos is of use to me because of the way he feels, he’s precisely the kind of man I would like to see in a high position in Grimney.

*He looks stern*.

It would be ironic if one day he assumed a position of power in Grimney, and you had denied the kingdom of the Dudrassa a strong link between land and sea.

*He downs the rest of the wine*.

We shall see.

*He looks at Arabella and smiles*.

I'd like a room tonight please. One overlooking the best aspects of the swamp.

I'm sure the Queen would look on the match differently if Kalvos was a man of wealth and power... although it would still not give him the royal blood that he lacks. She deserves a king, or at the very least a prince.

*Evarne smiles.*

Although perhaps you seek to put him in a position of power precisely because of his relationship with my niece. Without her he is just a knight, with her... well, I am sure you are not ignorant of her power. And there is no denying that her love for him has transformed him.

*She snaps her fingers at Arabella.*

Two more drinks elf, then get the man a room as he asks.

*She turns to Drax.*

Your love for the dead is immortal?

I buried my wife. Yes. Love for the dead is immortal.

*He takes his drink from the bar*.

Thank you Arabella. Do have a drink too. Your service is good.

* He slides a gold tobran across the bar*.

Evarne.

*He nods in thanks and raises the glass with a wry smile*.

We all get what we deserve.

*He takes a mouthful of his drink*.

My ambitions are based entirely on what we believe is best for Grimney. Power? I gave up power.

*He smiles*.

Yes. Kalvos is a more rounded individual. No longer a simple knight. He has strength and purpose. We all have that do we not?

Tell me Thadeus, do you know who my niece is? Are you aware of the blood flows in her veins?

*Evarne smiles.*

Lady Philomena is a Princess of the True Blood, an heir to the throne.

*She drinks thoughtfully.*

You do what is best for Grimney, so you must understand that I must do what is best for the Dudrassa. Our Princess is what is best...

Individuality Evarne, I understand that’s what separates us from the beasts of the sea and the beasts of the land.

*He smiles*

Your neice is a unifying force. That can only be a good thing. Surely not?

*He sips his wine*

And what of their daughter? What of her? Lacking in the true blood.

The mermaids have no interest in uniting the thrones of Grimney and Dudrassa. The sea is enough for us.

*Evarne looks thoughtful.*

The child... she is a beautiful thing, but human and illegitimate. She'll never ascend to our throne. All along I have said we should give her to Kalvos to raise in exchange for the return of our Princess.

I believe that the land and sea are as one Evarne.

*He gulp down the wine and places the glass gently upon the bar*.

A Beautiful thing and worthy of exchange. A touching sentiment for your little niece.

*He smiles*.

Would you like another drink or has the conversation run dry?

I am happy for another drink with you Drax.

*Evarne sighs*

Princess Philomena herself would understand the exchange, the royal children of the Dudrassa know we are pieces on a chessboard. What more sentiment do you want from me?

*She shakes her head.*

As one...It was always feared that the humans would use Philomena as an excuse to try to seize power over the sea. Humans are too greedy, they cannot be trusted.
