The Land of Grimney - The Illustrated Adventures of Cora Pearl, aged 12

“I live in Hope” the lad he said,
And in me that struck a chord;
For once I used to live there too
‘til they broke it, brick and board.
Hope House had walls of steadfastness
And a roof of pure resolve.
The doors were carved of sterner stuff
Iced doubt could not dissolve.

The streets reached out to Kingdoms
On which I’d hook my dreams
But I let a loose slate slip and fall
To expose the pine-soft beams.
Moulds of doubt wormed fast throughout
And while stone deflects the sling,
The fabric falls and crumbles
To the rot that starts within.

From town Hope shrank to village
As the folk all passed away
Over Futile-Ridge down through Gloomsdale
Into Pessimism where they’d stay.
But in Hope House yet I tarried
And let a candle burn.
My eyes would drink night skies of ink
Watching for your return.

You came - when the Demon’s work was done
And Hope laid smashed all round.
You beamed your glowing smile at me
And dropped an acorn to the ground.
Where Hope once stood, now bind-weeds coil;
No place left here for me.
But the memory of the town still dwells
In your smile and the young oak tree.
