MANGLED MEMORIES

Up and down goes the quiet flame
No need to pump the bellows
While hoping wooden fuel ignites
Even the mangle lives in the past

Out flows the cleanest stream of water
As often as my thirsty throat desires
No treks to the communal standpipe
Or backs stiff and strained by heavy pails

The perfect breeze is selected
With one simple press of a button
Hot and sweaty days are long gone
Natural discomfort a thing of the past

Strangers working the land to live
Plant, grow and pick my fruit and veg
Everyone wants to bring it to my door
So I can stay at home and do nothing

I shroud myself in the soft cardigan
That took her two weeks to knit
And escape into the sun's radiance
Absorbing the freedom of its heat

Ripples and rings decorate the canal
As hungry ducks lose their heads
Under the water's broken surface
And darting fish frantically disperse

Trees fight each other to stand tall
Gusts push and pull without direction
The strong wind yanks at my hair
Harshly reminding me I still exist...just

Long views pour green into my eyes
Tempting me into my daily walk
Shorter each day as the world closes in
Squeezing enthusiasm into submission

Daylight fades to a comforting glow
As I stoop to take off heavy shoes
Determined to keep my body alive
But struggling to remember why

Endless rest comes ever closer
As newfangled ways and means
Spoil and fatten mothers and fathers
Their children will learn as much
