The Ark loomed and peered at us,
A dark glance as if to say
“Take a look at these two.
Do you think we should let them play?”
The answer, a revealed secret
Marked by a mountain ash:
On the face of a noble mountain,
A fearsome looking gash.

A branch it waved and beckoned
“Come up! The climb starts here.”
Nothing was said of loose hand-holds
Or chimneys belching fear.
The climb was made for lighter men
(At least ones without rucksacks).
“Three points” included knees and ears
And finger-tips and backs.

We gain the top after many a heart stop,
Sun bursting from low in the west,
And feel as if the mountain has pinned
A medal on each chest.
There’s smiles and grins and slaps on backs.
So glad we haven’t fallen.
And the Ark smiles too, it had some fun
With grey-top and the tall ‘en.

Thanks for the thoughtful words!

I've never thought the powers of nature enjoyed our play. Are we but playthings and our 'smiles and grins and slaps on backs' self delusion?

If we indulge in all those things because we think we can conquer mountains, then yes, it's self-delusion. If it's because we acknowledge we've conquered our own weaknesses, with a little help from the mountain, they're all perfectly valid. :D
