Said Lance-Jack Rose,
“What a rag-tag lot we are.
Two kilted jocks, Home Counties men,
Engineers, some Yorkshire bred
And a Middlesex lad with a star.”
Said Sergeant Halsey
“Hold yer lip, old timer!
Officer on Parade.
And Hoad me lad
Quit giggling there!
This ain’t the Boys’ Brigade.”
“Nice to see the Boss is Welsh,”
Said Taff Smith to Sapper Bray.
“He’s all right,” said Bill of the Buffs,
“So cushy as I think I’ll stay.”
“Not like you to hang about,”
Said Aby with a grin.
“You, me and Harry stand here,
In a row and all hemmed in,
Just as if some General would
Stop us repeating our sin.”
“No talk of funk there, Harris!”
Lieutenant Davies said.
“Here we are all the same,
Redeemed of blame and ranked close
Stone to stone to stone.
Just like those Frenchies behind us,
All brothers in the bone.
Look sharp now, for inspection.
Not the General nor yet the C.O.
It’s a family over from Blighty,
Heads bowed and voices low.
That thrill that passes through you
Occurs when your name is read.
Those folk from the realm of the living
Remembering us of the dead.”

Busy editing stories, but not busy writing poems. All my recent posts come from those I have written over the years. Soon I will be scraping the barrel and then you will all have to cover your eyes.
