Martius, cold Martius: Your blood ran hot that day Before the Senate saw you And ordered you in clay. Until then they knew you not Nor yet you had been born, But Fate came to change all that In the shape of one sharp thorn. The message long forgotten The senators just bone, But Martius! Here you are In brass and bronze and stone. So all pomp has perished: Legates, Senate, Kings; While the courage of a shepherd lad Still down through time it rings. |
