I sigh for you And cry for you, My comrade dead in arms. ‘Tis for I could not die for you My hurt resists all balms.
Our hearts were young When songs were sung And brotherly oaths were made. But I turned, ran past while you stood fast And turned for me a blade.
I choked down bile. I saw you smile And wave me off from danger. Those eyes so clean will again be seen By kings about a manger.
That sword struck deep, Your life snatched cheap: It clove you to the bone. Your life was quenched as mine was wrenched From all joys ever known.
The foe he turned: My eyes they burned As would those of all who knew you. But I fought too late to change cruel fate Or take the cut that slew you.
Now brother bold In my arms cold; No more to hurt or sorrow: While my pain shall come again Tomorrow and tomorrow.
You did not die So that I Should live out a life so sad. So friend, goodbye. For you I’ll try Once more to make me glad.
I sigh for you And cry for you. I shall strive to heal my sores; To live again and give again, But my heart will e’er be yours.
