Post subject:  Religion... really?

What is wrong with us today what ails the human race

That lets religion make decisions that are common place?

From continent to continent the wars just rumble on

About whose friend all ills can mend, while praising him in song

Buildings rise from every corner, clothing strictly worn

Daily prayer, you should be there, or risk a deadly scorn

People tortured, flogged and beaten simply for "blaspheming"

A mockery to you and me, of any God's true meaning.

We have lost the plot it seems religion has such powers,

As highest priest dines on a feast, ensconced in Golden Towers

So here's a thought, a simple one that slipped into my head

Stop killing people under steeples, let's make friends instead

Have you been reading my mind, Iceman?

On second thoughts, you haven't, otherwise there would be a smattering of unprintables.

Kudos.

If you'd stayed gone, we wouldn't be able to enjoy fine poems like this one! Glad you're here, Iceman! 8-)

Brill...your down-to-earth view of the world really does do my brain a lot of good...or something.

I hope you don't mind me posting this in your thread Iceman. I felt it appropriate...kind of.

AT THEIR AGE - AT OUR AGE

The Mormons came to visit me
Two children knocked and stepped inside
They told me they had never done
An awful thing, not even lied

So young to be out on their own
In my South London place of birth
They proudly asked me to address
Them both as 'Elders' - what on earth!?

They told me how I should behave
And talked about their own short lives
No alcohol, or need to smoke
They had no friends with guns or knives

A simple day-to-day routine
Just helping people realize
Their lives were bad, but could be changed
With prayers to open up their eyes

I promised I'd do what they said
If it would mean I could be saved
I told them I would pray each day
And give up everything I craved

They left my house with heads held high
So young with nothing bad to tell
Just glad they'd helped another one
Begin their journey out of Hell

So off I went to watch TV
And thought how long my life had been
With traumas, pain and bastard men
Since I was only seventeen

Naivety had spoken loud
Through youngsters who had sat right here
And told me how they could exist
Without the vices I hold dear

But I remember being them
Back then, when life was fresh and new
Not sour and steeped in bitterness
Not filled with things no-one should do

I flicked the kettle on to boil
And then remembered it was bad
To have a coffee and a fag
The thought of that just made me sad

So with my hourly cigarette
I downed a mug of strong espresso
'Cos if the Book of Mormon's right
To make amends, you just confesso!

Of course Gwenlian! Or you could just say...'I bet my dog can run faster than you...I'll give you a ten second head start...one...two...three...' Haha!

Seriously...the Mormon boys were the nicest you could possibly meet. They were really happy chappies. Good luck to 'em I say. I wonder what they're doing these days. Probably chillin' out down the pub...bless 'em.

I was targeted by Jehovah's Witnesses for a while. I invited them in and produced an interlinear Bible (that's one that show Greek and Hebrew). I managed to punch huge holes in their arguments, and they left unsatisfied. Every time one failed to convert me, they would send another, and another. They gave up after a while.
