Post subject:  who am I

I was always my fathers daughter,
then always my husbands wife
I became my children,s mother
an integral part of their life

now I dearly loved my father
not so much the husband, I fear
for my children I would fight lions
should any, by chance, venture near

but sometimes in a still moment
I would wonder how it would be
If just for the briefest of seconds
I could simply be no one but me?

My Father is no longer with us
the husband was kicked into touch
My sons have grown and flown now
and it doesn't happen so much

So now I am someone's Partner
but call me this at your peril
for after many decades of longing
I am simply known as Meryl!!

Yes, yes, yes!
I've always said this to people.
We appear to have similar minds, me and you.
Probably similar pasts as well!
Have to get together one day and put the world to rights!
Over a few beers and a curry...of course!
I reckon we could do it too!

Excellent work. I know something of what you mean, though I have never been a husband or father.

Over the past few years I have been shedding the layers that hide my true self. I no longer need to be intelligent, or successful, or even right. I no longer have to play the part that society and media say I should. I am no-ones clone. I have discovered the true me, with all of my flaws and weaknesses.

I have discovered the one thing I really need, and I have it. That is friendship. True, reliable, friendship. The only thing I strive for is to be as good a friend as I can to those who love me, who I love.

Hmm this isn't so much about hiding under layers, as always being perceived by others as an appendage to someone else, someone's daughter someones wife someone's mother, at times I wondered if anyone actually knew my name ! :)

You are Gwenllian, and I claim my 5 Grimmets (or whatever they use for money around here).

Sorry, Gwen. My fault. I read into your poem a different message. As I say, I get things wrong.

You make an excellent point; we need to be known in our own right.

I totally get it...and I get you too.
Internet forums are great for getting similar people together, when distance would, otherwise, keep then apart.
