A drummer lad of the 68th, Londonderry he did drum for. The Lord of course sits on his horse, But the lad walks ‘til he’s done for. We cannot hide that Lords must ride And boys are far too lowly To trot or race; it’s fit they pace At a distance and more slowly. But the lad grew sound; now underground After long life: as a farmer he did settle. While the cold bronze peer through many a year Straddles a mount as hard as metal. Lad, crave not fame nor laud your name: There’s dross aplenty would spoil it. Better it dwell in hearts you love well Than on a plinth that’s a pigeon’s toilet. |

Love it! Pigeons toilet! I should just point out I also love the sentiment of the whole poem and it didn't just appeal to my sense of toilet humour fun! |
