What does being good mean to a child?
What does being good to a child mean?

GOOD TO A CHILD

How many times have I been good compared to being bad
Why don't you ever tell me when I've made you really glad
I want to be the little boy you always want to hold
Not all the things you say I am when all you do is scold

But you will only talk to me when I have made you sad
The only way I get your love is when I make you mad
So even if you shout at me and scream, it means a lot
I want to be around you, you're my mother...all I've got

You always say be good...it's just a word and nothing real
I want to know what good is like and how it makes you feel
I know what being bad is 'cos you tell me every day
And when I throw a tantrum, it's a way to make you stay

It's no good just ignoring me...say what you feel out loud
Just let me know when I am good and tell me you are proud
The more you look away from me, the more I'll get upset
The more frustrated I become, the more distraught you'll get

I hate it when you're angry and your eyes shed tear on tear
It makes me cry as well when 'naughty boy' is all I hear
So when you're pleased with what I've done, you only have to say
And then we'll both be good as new and brush our tears away

Powerful stuff and good points.

I have never been a parent, but I am in the position of guiding people. It seems to me that this is a similar process.

I think it comes to this.

Give the person (child or adult) the opportunity to create a positive and attainable vision for themselves.

Encourage them along the path to the fulfilment of that vision.

Every time they fail, encourage them to have another go.

Offer grace and forgiveness instead of criticism and condemnation.

We have to watch how we react to people and situations.

Very often, when we react badly, it is because we let our ego get in the way. The things that we find annoying, insulting, upsetting or offensive are the result of us choosing to take them that way.

Sometimes, we put to high a value on things and not enough on people.

Indeed. If someone looks at me strangely in the street. I don't assume it's because they cannot even begin to believe what they've just seen. I smile and carry on past, because I just know they're only jealous of my new scooter.

I am a parent, and you have made me really think.

Hopefully my girls will benefit because of your words.

Who needs a shrink when you got this place!!
