*The village children huddle up together in the stone floored school room. Some children are crying, some stare straight ahead and a few of them play with the old toys that the maids have found for them. The youngest are already asleep on the blankets. Narvik Karn bounces a crying toddler on his knee and smiles to himself as he looks around the dusty room. On the wall is a family tree of the Royal Family Grimney, a timeline of the great battles and a neatly labelled star chart with the initials VK written in the far right hand corner.* |

*Karn looks into the toddlers worried eyes*. It's the mask.... I'm not a pretty face, but don't be afraid.... *He looks at the wall and studies the different battles*. I've fought in many battles..... *Karn smiles at the toddler*. At the end I never felt I won any..... *He puts the toddler down and walks over to the children and kneels down beside them*. We'll do our best for you... Don't think we won't.... Because we will.... There is goodness here... And no harm will come to any of you... |

But... you're Kanarans! Why would you help us? We've heard stories of your armies... *The boy picks up the toddler and gives him a cuddle* There is a man with one eye who is as big as mountain, he keeps a mermaid princess here locked in a tower. It's not good to keep mermaids locked up, they belong in the sea. *He looks straight in the man's eyes* Are we to be locked up in this tower too? |

Zed Novak. *He gingerly offers his hand to the soldier as if he expects it to be cut off* We are grateful for all that you have done... even if we don't understand why you saved us. We thought you would hate us... and the soldiers that came to our villages and built the pyres... * He shakes his head* Is there a one eyed man here? Do you protect the Princess from him? We have heard he drinks from the skulls of his enemies. *One of girls pokes him* Oh and the girls want to know all sorts of soppy stuff about the Princess like is she very beautiful and if she is the mermaid whose true love was a knight who fought to the death for her? *He rolls his eyes* Girls are like that. |
