Those shirts might protect you from swords or arrows but they won't protect you against drowning Monica. I know you've joined those at the Black Pillar, I have my own spies. You've sealed you fate lady. I wouldn't have stopped you seeing Urat, we just wanted him taken care of by those who love him not a slave. Yours will be an ugly death, we mermaids do not fail to punish those who cross them, witch.

You're lucky I'm on a date or I'd deal with you myself now but perhaps I'll leave it to the Queen's Coven. Oh yes, you heard right the Queen's Coven, they will find you and make you suffer. Now excuse me, I have a soldier to play with.

I have no idea what you mean. As for Urat, he is in love with me, and that is all that matters. I have deep feelings for the man, and you and your tavern friends will not stand in the way of our destiny. It is unfortunate that you simply see men as playthings, and therefore not worth dying for. I would happily die for Urat Holme, and when I do, it will prove how strong my love for him is. He will not thank you kindly if you drown me. Now if you'll excuse me I have shopping to do.

Oh Monica, Monica! How can you claim to care for Urat when you have joined those who tried to kill him. Urat would only love someone who stood against those of the Black Pillar, not stood with them. Your charm has worn off now, all Urat feels toward you is shame and pity. Love won by tricks and enchantment does not compare to true love. Why do you think I have never ensnared Kalvos with a song? Because I only want his heart to be mine if it is willing. And as he has signed his life away to the Queen, I don't think it will ever be mine.

I may play with men's hearts but at least I don't have to drug them to make them love me... Not that many will let you get close now you have 'witch' and 'poisoner' written over your skin. It's a neat curse, isn't it? Very hard to undo... Still if you join us, spy on those at the Pillar for me then maybe I will take the curse off and Urat might even fall in love with you for your bravery. Unless you decide to do the right thing you will die painfully and unloved.

Oh Philomena! Philomena! I thought I felt unwell, and I had noticed strange words floating in front of my face when I stared in the mirror this morning, but not one of those words said murderer, but I’ll admit not all were good.

I doubt you’d fair as well if that spell of yours was put on you. After all, you’ve killed a lot of people. Seems a bit hypocritical to judge me as evil. Especially when it was aggression and slaughter that uncovered that pillar, and before you make a rash judgement mermaid, let me tell you that those who worship there have not been treated well by the masters and mistresses of Grimney.

As for Kalvos, he serves the Queen, and Gideon Drake, and neither of them are good or noble.

A final thing, before I go on my way. I may have given Ratty a little bit of love potion, but that's because he’s a shy man and needed a little encouragement, it may have upset his stomach, and that was unfortunate, but his reserved nature was standing in the way of his desires, and you have denied him a chance of everlasting happiness, and I would have made him a good wife. Instead your thugs led by that Gwenllian woman marched through my house and carried him off, my poor snoog was terrified. I should have had you all arrested. Shame on Jacob Vask, as I thought he was my friend.

As for that G.E.C man Sweeney sent to my door, tell that spineless long head that he should grow up and fight his own battles. As for me, I am no spy. Anyway, I must continue on my way Philomena. I am sure our paths will cross again very soon...

I never said murderer but poisoner is clear to see. As for what words would be on my face? I am no saint either but I doubt anything too bad. I have killed only to protect those I love and misdeeds that come from noble intent do not count on this curse. I am hardly ashamed of my sexual exploits and other than those what would I be judged on? Why not let's see? I'll run my curse comb through my hair... Protector, cursemaker, heartbreaker, storm raiser... That is enough I think, don't want to mark my beautiful face any longer. Not the nastiest of names really. I don't drug my husbands or beat my servants. Yes this curse is quite fair. Others think I should be harsher in my curses but I am not as ruthless as some say. As for Kalvos, I know his flaws but I also know that deep down his heart is good and noble, no matter who he serves. Can you say the same for your own heart?

No doubt those at the Pillar have been harshly treated but that is no excuse for trying to poison those who stand in their way, to try to enslave the land and blacken the sea. I know their aims Monica and I know that you have offered to spy for them for revenge of Urat's rescue. I am fair, I have offered you a chance to redeem yourself but you continue to lie. You may tell your masters at the Pillar this though, they might try to control the Pillar but whose storm uncovered it? Whose song called to it? Yes, my destiny is caught up in the Pillar but I will not unlock it, I will not be part of the destruction of this land either through the Pillar or the Call of the Narran. I am a Protector and always will be.

You think it was his shy nature that held back Urat? Monica surely you know that if someone is poisoned by a love potion it is because their heart is in love with someone else? I suspect it is his departed wife he still pines for... Poor Urat, poor Monica for it is impossible to compete with the love of the long deceased. Perhaps if you had given him time for his love to grow, had taken Gwen and I into your confidence, perhaps in time you might have made him a good wife. But it was your haste, your actions that destroyed that. Look in your mirror and you will see it plain on your face.

One thing I am sorry for... I am sorry your snoog was terrified. Poor creature is terrorised by your whip enough, I am sorry my friends added to the poor wretch's misery. I hope it recovers from the upset soon and that you did not punish it for Urat's escape.
