Fifty deaths. No I cannot rejoice in any of them, I had no right to their lives. I wish Urat was here to comfort me, he could always talk sense in this confusing place. Must we kill them all?

Don't listen to Darius, he's here for the money. Yes, I'll pour you a large wine... You know what old soldier's say.... That the saddest thing next to a battle lost is a battle won, I know that's the truth. I know what you feel, you mustn't lose that feeling, painful though it is.
Urat would not be against what you have done. It's them or us, they were probably planning to burn the tavern down.
I'm not much of a comfort, that I know, I'm just an old soldier, and never thought I'd be fighting again. I had planned to retire, and just spend time with the grandchildren.

There's a bottle of brandy in the bread bin, I think I may need a glass of that too. The odds look bad but their numbers have more than halved already. Those three did not turn traitor lightly. Perhaps the rest could be persuaded to surrender. I want no more death than can be helped.

Darius was looking for that, I wonder who put it in there? I can probably guess, that boy will drink us dry.
Well, Philomena, I don't know how we could talk them into surrendering. Unless we offered them something. Kursk obviously plans to fight to the bitter end.
Now, let's have two glasses of brandy, and think ahead to better times.They'll be better times, we just have to live each day as it comes.
Wish I'd brought my ax. Had I known this was going to happen, I'd have come better prepared.
Oh well.
The fire is a comfort. I used to sit with Matila by the fire. Happy times those. My wife used to say that with all its lines, scars, dents and ridges, my face looked like a map of Grimney.
I miss my wife. That's another thing I share with Urat, our losses. Still no point in being all maudlin about it.

No, I know Kursk must die but I thought there may be others that would rather live than drown. If not... I suppose I am a killer now anyway.
Urat's old sword is here, would you like that? I can show you your wife agaiin if you wish but sometimes it is best to leave those memories alone.

Philomena, you're no killer. You were just trying to protect us, you shouldn't feel bad. I know it's hard not to, but they've chosen their way of life, and they're trying to murder us. Sorry you and Gwenllian got caught up in our affairs, but the mire was a peaceful place once, you're not seeing its people at their best.
Maybe more help will come. Before I came here I heard your sailor friend was being released. I'm sure he'll ride here when daylight comes.
Urat's sword? Bit on the rusty side that one. I was never very good with a sword, lost some fingers last time I used one. No I'll stick to my cleaver and my fists if need be.
I've heard about your mirror. No, but thanks all the same. I'd want to touch her, smell her. And to see her behind cold glass and for her not to see me, would be too painful.
I've not aged well in ten years. If Matila could see me now, she'd think I was my dad. What did you see in the mirror?

You are wise Jacob, the mirror always tells the truth but it is not reality. I have looked in my mirror lots recently, I see many things. I have a future that much I know.
You should come to the tavern more often, I think Urat's loneliness has eased since we have arrived.
Korben I am glad you liked the food, can I get you any more.
