Vortigern... I feel unwell. I think those months in the confines of Stormrock Castle have been injurious to my health. The long ride fatigues me and I feel sick. Perhaps I do not have as much strength as I first thought.
*She smiles wanly as Vortigern dismounts and helps her down. The mermaid looks sad as he brushes her hair away from her cheek. She whispers so only he can hear.*
I fear the worst. I do not think I shall ever be free...
*Philomena takes the water from Arlan and sips it*

*Vortigern lifts the mermaid into his arms and looks up at Raif and the others*.
We need a little shade, Philomena has a fever....
*He looks over to the trees and takes a second bottle of water from Raif*.
Stay alert everyone.... I know I don't have to tell you...
*Vortigern carries Philomena across the road and lays her down beneath a tree. He places his jacket behind the mermaid's head and sits down beside her*.
You can be free.
*He speaks softly*.
I have an ally at Stormrock, Darl won't be alive for much longer.... I've talked with Niara... She is happy to support you and she'll allow you to go free once Darl is dead....

Darl deserves whatever fate befalls him Philomena.
*He keeps his voice low and in a whisper*.
You don't love him.
*He reaches out to touch the Princess, but draws his hand back when he observes Arlan and Hawk watching him*.
Niara told me how Darl wanted her dead and how for years he'd plotted against her father. It'll be good riddance from this land and when we find the chance will leave these knights and find our freedom.
*Vortigern shakes his head*.
Darl must die. You owe him nothing. He'll kill you if you stay with him...
*He looks at Philomena with concern*.
Are you still feeling sick? Are you in bad pain?

I will never love him... but I must be loyal to Darl and I must protect him. He is my husband and he stands between the High Council and my daughter.
*She gives a low whistle to the kelpie*
My sickness no longer matters. Let us hope that these minutes pass without bloodshed.
