The week before my father died unexpectedly, he seemed to run into just about all of his friends. Casually. At church, the grocery store, even at the local hot dog stand.
Then late one night, my father suffered a heart attack and died.
The next morning, I called friends and family and let them all know my dad had passed. When I called my cousin Ray, he sounded more scared than upset, and hurriedly handed the phone off to his wife to talk to me.
It wasn't until well over a year later I found out what had him so shaken.
In the middle of the night, his wife sat up in bed and said "Teddy is here". Ray told her that she was dreaming, not to be silly, and to go back to bed.
But she swore he was just standing there, at the foot of their bed, looking at them.
And when I asked what time this had happened, they said at exactly the same time my dad had passed.
It seemed that my dad had gotten to say goodbye to everyone that mattered that last week of his life, but not to his favorite cousin Ray... so he made one last visit.
