When the King freed me from Zarko's slavery, and joined me to the Instructor, that was just the start.
Let me tell you about the Instructor. He is the most powerful being I have ever encountered, and yet he never does anything against my will. He is gentle and wise, always encouraging, never condemning. I have never known him to be angry with me, but to feel his disappointment is, possibly, far worse.
The Instructor has the ability to take me over from time to time, so I speak the words he gives me, act according to his prompts.
I first noticed this 2 weeks into my service of the King. I was at a gathering, when a sister came to me. She was agitated and unsure of what she should do. Though normally talkative and lively, I became calm, and simply said "You're here." There was power in my voice to bring her peace. After she left, I returned to normal. The experience was very pleasant.
Well, over the next few years, I spent time with a group of brothers and sisters. The I left, finding my own way in the world. I drifted away from my brothers and sisters, but the King was always in my thoughts.
After twenty years, the King knocked on the door of my room, came in, and sat down. I was astonished and frightened, although the King is not fearsome to look at. His smile is like the sun shining after a storm. His voice like the laughter of a river after the spring thaw.
He said, in a matter of fact tone, "Everything you have done up until now has been worthless, but the Instructor has been preparing you all through this time. Now you are ready for the next stage."
He told me that I had to change my attitudes to people. I was never prejudiced, but some people made me feel uncomfortable. I had to show love and kindness to everyone, no matter who they were, no matter how they treated me.
I had to treat my money and possessions as if they belonged to the King and not me, and to make them available to all that needed them. Also, whatever I gave, I should not expect back. Even if it was taken from me, I should not ask for it back. I learned not to get upset if thing were lost, damaged or stolen. So, I gained more peace.
Over the next few years, the Instructor took me down a path of humbling. All that I relied upon was taken from me. My self-image was taken apart. All I had I had to share with others. My status, independence, wealth, all went.
But, here is the thing. The more I lost, the more free I became. I came to terms with my limitations, and became more secure in myself. I always had everything I needed, so I learned to be content. My ego was reduced, so I no longer had ambitions, and was content to do whatever job needed to be done. I learned to laugh at myself rather than cringe when I made mistakes or looked foolish.
I learned that my true wealth was the people that cared about me, who I cared about. I learned to serve and act with kindness, mercy and forgiveness.
Also, during this time, the Instructor taught me about using his power. All I had to do was let him take control, and he guided me. Much as an archery instructor will hold his pupil's arms to show them how to hold and aim a bow. On many occasions, he gave me words of peace to resolve any conflicts I was in, and words of power to gain extra strength when I needed it.
I think the greatest thing about the Instructor is his kindness. Every time I make a mistake, even a serious one, he encourages me to have another go, and not to give up trying, no matter how often I slip. I know I must have this same attitude to those around me.
